In January, 2017, the Be the Peace Institute partnered with the Nova Scotia Advisory Council on the Status of Women to facilitate the Nova Scotia part of a national initiative to mark the 100th anniversary of some Canadian women being granted the right to vote, as well as part of the celebrations to mark Canada’s 150th birthday. It was sponsored by Equal Voice (www.equalvoice.ca) and Daughters of the Vote (http://www.daughtersofthevote.ca/) and included an event on January 12, 2017 to honour all of the young women who applied and those who were able to ‘take their seat’ in the Parliament of Canada in March. Our Executive Director (Sue Bookchin) facilitated the event, which included the Premier of Nova Scotia, Senator Wanda Thomas-Bernard, the Member of Parliament for South Shore St. Margaret’s – Bernadette Jordan, and several female Members of the Legislative Assembly, including sitting Cabinet Ministers. Thank you to everyone who participated – it was an inspiring and hopeful day!
